๐Ÿš Rasta Rice Recipe – Spicy Ghanaian Stir-Fry with Street Food Vibes

Craving something bold, spicy, and totally satisfying? Rice Rasta (also known as Rasta Rice) is a street-style rice dish loaded with colorful vegetables, pepper, sausage or egg, and smoky jollof-like flavor.

It’s the perfect “lazy day” one-pan meal that still brings the heat—and the flavor.

๐Ÿ›’ Ingredients:

  • 3 cups cooked rice (preferably day-old or firm)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 onion (sliced)
  • 1 red bell pepper (sliced)
  • 1 green bell pepper (sliced)
  • 1 small carrot (optional, julienned)
  • 1 scotch bonnet or chili (sliced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tsp curry powder
  • 1 tsp paprika or suya spice
  • 1 bouillon cube or seasoning powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Protein (optional): sausage, boiled egg, chicken, tofu

๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿพ‍๐Ÿณ How to Make It:

Step 1: Stir-Fry the Veggies
Heat oil in a large pan or wok. Add onions and sautรฉ for 1 minute. Add garlic, sliced peppers, carrot, and chili. Stir-fry on high heat for 2–3 minutes.

Step 2: Add Spices
Sprinkle curry powder, paprika, and bouillon cube. Stir well to coat the veggies.

Step 3: Add Cooked Rice
Add your rice and mix thoroughly to combine with the veggies. Stir-fry on high heat for 5–7 minutes. You want a slightly smoky effect, so don’t be afraid to let some rice brown a little at the bottom.

Step 4: Add Protein (Optional)
Add fried sausage slices, shredded chicken, tofu, or top with a fried or boiled egg.

Step 5: Serve Hot!
Garnish with extra chili, spring onions, or a drizzle of shito (pepper sauce) if you like it fiery.

๐Ÿง  Why It's Called Rasta Rice

The name “Rasta” comes from the colorful combo of red, green, and gold (peppers, carrots, rice)—like the Rastafarian flag. It’s also a fun name for how vibey this dish feels.

๐Ÿ’ก Marrone’s Tips:

  • Day-old rice is best—it doesn’t get mushy.
  • Use suya spice or dry fish powder for a deeper smoky flavor.
  • Want it vegan? Skip the meat and add mushrooms or beans!
